At first, the idea of writing letters to prison inmates as pen pals seemed daunting and perplexing. However, curiosity led me to discover that these unconventional friendships could bring unexpected bursts of joy and fulfillment. It’s a small gesture that can make a big impact on someone’s life. It’s like finding a spark of light in the midst of darkness. There’s something magical about putting pen to paper and unleashing my thoughts and feelings, knowing that someone on the other end eagerly waits to read them. It’s like crafting a piece of myself and sending it off, igniting a sense of connection that transcends physical barriers. Writing letters became more than just a task; it became a soul-nourishing experience that brought bursts of excitement whenever I received a reply.
I was hooked on these pen pal friendships. But after a few weeks, my back, neck, and hands began to pay the price. Writing letters to my prison pen pals became a painful task. I started writing from the couch, or from bed. Then, I tried more traditional surfaces like desks and tables. But even those caused strain on my neck and back, making the experience uncomfortable physically. I felt discouraged as I struggled to find a better way, but ultimately the discomfort became unbearable, and I eventually had to cease writing altogether. For six long months, my communication with my pen pals came to a halt, and I felt a sense of loss and isolation.
WHAT MY CHIROPRACTOR TOLD ME
I sought advice from my chiropractor, who informed me that my writing posture was negatively impacting my spine and causing the pain I was experiencing. He emphasized the importance of finding a more ergonomic solution to resume my correspondence without harming my health, and he suggested something called a Pillow Pad. It’s a multi-angle soft stand for tablets, e-readers, books, papers, and printed materials. Its lightweight and plush design make it perfect for using on the couch, bed, or even on the floor. The Pillow Pad allows you to prop up your device or notepad at the perfect angle, making it easier to read, watch videos, or, in my case, write letters for hours without discomfort.
There are a few different varieties of these pillows. I saw a lower quality one at Grocery Outlet the other day, inf act. But the Pillow Pad is by far the best one, because it can be used in three separate positions/angles. One position worked better in bed, while another worked better on the sofa. The Pillow Pad provided the support, flexibility, and comfort I desperately needed, and revolutionized my writing experience. Its ergonomic design and soft cushioning provided the perfect angle for effortless writing. I can now write down my thoughts and stories with ease, indulging in the cozy comfort it offers. The Pillow Pad has reignited my passion for writing and improved my physical well-being.

This probably sounds crazy, but I’ll say it anyway: the pillow pad also enhanced the emotional connection I felt when sharing stories with my pen pals. Suddenly it was as if I could pour my heart out and share anecdotes and weave tales of hope and resilience without any distractions. I truly believe that my newfound physical comfort (in my neck, back, shoulders, and hands) made it easier for me to express myself and connect with my pen pals on a deeper level, fostering stronger and more meaningful relationships. I felt like I was making a positive difference in someone else’s life, and it motivated me to continue connecting and sharing through the written word. It’s amazing how a simple change in posture and comfort can influence the quality and sincerity of my writing.
The combination of discovering the Pillow Pad and embracing the act of writing letters to my prison pen pals has brought about a significant change in my life. I encourage you to explore new ways to connect and empathize with others, and perhaps, the Pillow Pad will play a part in your journey.
