“Be patient with yourself whenever your plan isn’t unfolding as you thought it would. Extend love to yourself whenever the world is being cold. Forgive yourself when you fall short or fail … You are worthy of your own love and care.” -Morgan Richard Olivier

This powerful quote has had a huge impact on me during my incarceration, but the advice is every bit as valuable for free-world people. Life rarely unfolds the way we planned. It’s so easy to feel bitter and angry, and let those emotions consume us. But with patience and self-compassion, we can properly channel the positivity and move forward, not backward.

I’m a 49-year-old married Muslim man, originally from Oakland, CA. My life certainly didn’t turn out as I had planned. I’m now more than halfway through my 27-year prison sentence. The first half was filled with appeals, litigation, and depositions. I became caught up in the negativity, in the system, in how other inmates were mistreated, neglected, and denied basic human rights. I got angry when DOC employees blatantly lied under oath. But all that internal strife and frustration wasn’t helping me. It didn’t change my sentence. It only caused me undue stress and additional pain.

A wise man once said not to look at where you fell, but instead to look at where you slipped. Instead of dwelling on my mistakes, on my current living situation, it would be more fruitful to analyze how I got here in the first place and ensure sure I didn’t repeat the same mistakes. As such, I’ve given up litigation, given up trying to rewrite the past, and instead I’m focused on accepting responsibility for my actions. Sure, I’d like to speak my truth and tell my story, but I’d like to do so in a healthy and constructive manner.

I’m in dire need of good friends. Being married, I’m not in search of a romantic relationship of any kind. I simply hope to meet some positive, motivating people to share stories, advice, kind words, intellect, and understanding. I’m reaching out to the world in hopes that one of you will reach back.

How Does This Work?
This is a great time to briefly introduce yourself and let the inmate know what interested you about their pen pal profile.

Please note: This service gives you the opportunity to send your first message to a new pen pal, free of charge. If you send more than one message to the same inmate, or a message to someone you already know, they will not be forwarded.

When you send a message using this form, our staff will print and mail it via US Mail or forward it via the prison’s email system, every two weeks. Be patient, and don’t expect an immediate reply. Inmates can’t email you back directly, so include your full name, email address, and complete mailing address or phone number for a reply. Messages without valid contact info won’t be forwarded, nor will messages with threatening or abusive language.

Want to message directly and more quickly? Check the inmate’s profile to see which email service he or she uses (i.e. GettingOut, JPay, Securus). These services cost between 5 to 50 cents per message and offer you the ability to message them directly and instantly.
